10 More Free, Awesome Programs to Download For Your PC

There are many awesome themes available for WordPress as well!
There are many awesome themes available for WordPress as well!

Judging by the hub statistics of my last article pertaining to free programs up for download, I take it that you guys would probably like to see more! After further exploration of what the ‘net had to offer, I’ve mustered up yet another list of great, free programs. My original list of free programs was a bit classic and traditional, but this time I tried to mix it up to give you guys some helpful free software you have possibly never tried of before. So here it is, 10+ more free programs for you to gobble up for your using pleasures.

WordpressFirst up, it’s Wordpress! This is a blogger’s paradise as it provides people who love to write with a user-friendly, versatile application written in PHP. When installing this handy tool, you create a database on your web server, upload the necessary installation files, and after a few clicks, BAM – you’re ready to start blogging! Not only is using this platform a piece of cake, you are provided with attractive and clean templates for your blog that don’t look totally awkward and tacky. Can’t beat that for free!

OpenOffice.orgIf you’re looking for something similar to the Microsoft Office suite but really don’t have the money to splurge on all the expensive brand names, there is a free program out there designed especially for you. OpenOffice.org specializes in word processing, presentation, graphics, spreadsheets, databases, and any of your other office software needs. It’s multilingual, able to read documents that were created using other Office programs (such as Microsoft), and extremely easy to use. So if you’re still saving up for an office suite that will perform just as well as one for free, forget about that. It’s a thing of the past. Give this a try!

AudacityCan we say practical? After downloading this audio editor, I was blown away by the user-friendly interface before even working with a single file. If you’ve used other audio editors, then you probably got the uncomfortable feeling as if you were in the control center of a spaceship. Not so with this one. With Audacity, expect to be able to do a number of things such as work with large files quickly, record up to 16 channels simultaneously, import several file types (WAV, MP3, AIFF, AU, OGG, etc.), apply loads of effects to your sounds, and so much more. You can even use plug-ins with Audacity which in turn reveals an endless amount of possibilities. This was a great find in my search for free programs!

Quick Media Converter HDWith Quick Media Converter HD, you are able to convert between almost ALL audio and video formats including DVD, AVI, MPEG, Flash, Quicktime, MP4, MP3, Xvid, DivX, WMA, and many more. Converting multiple files all at once is another great option with this as you don’t have to work with each file one-by-one. One more feature of this program that I particularly love is the fact that you can record desktop activity straight to a video. If you’re into creating tech tutorials, then this is a pretty nice find for somebody like you.

RoboformEver get tired of performing tedious tasks such as filling out login forms, registration forms, coming up with clever passwords, etc.? Roboform does all of that for you with the simple click of a button. You use the free program by creating a profile with all of your information specified, and when you reach a screen that prompts you to fill out a form or log-in, you easily press your profile button and everything is magically entered into the boxes. Talk about time-saving! You have the option to create multiple profiles as well, in the case that several people that use the computer want to make use of Roboform. If you are fan of using GPT sites as well, you can possibly see how this tool would be beneficial to you.

Daemon Tools LiteI absolutely love this program. With Daemon Tools Lite, you are able to insert important CD-ROMs that you want to protect into your CD drive and create ISO images from them on your computer. ISO images, in a nutshell, are files that contain every single thing a CD contains. It’s like a CD-ROM, but in file form. With Daemon Tools, you can open the ISO and the program will create a virtual CD drive on your computer, so it is like running the actual CD-ROM, but you aren’t. ISO’s are also “burn-able,” so if you want to create copies of your CD’s in this particular way, it is possible (depending on copyright laws, of course). Check this free program out!

Google EarthBy now, you’ve probably heard of Google Earth unless you’ve been living under a rock, but I don’t think this list of free programs would be complete without it. Google Earth is great because it allows users to view satellite photos of the Earth and even zoom all the way down to street views of most locations. Rad, right? You are able to view photos of anywhere ranging from the galaxies of outer space to the ocean floors. In addition, the program offers exploration of the moon, recordings of tours, Mars exploration, and so much more.

CCleanerThis multilingual PC optimization gizmo is awesome in that it clears your computer of unnecessary baggage such as Internet Explorer’s, Mozilla Firefox’s, Google Chrome’s, Opera’s, and Safari’s temporary files (history, cookies, cache, URL history), cleans your Recycle Bin, and so much more. For a full run-down of everything that CCleaner takes care of for you (because the list is pretty awesomely extensive), check out the product website by click the link above. Another great addition to the list of free programs!

Spybot Search & DestroyI wouldn’t consider this a newer free program since it has been around for quite awhile, but it still seems to do an outstanding job of fending off spyware, adware, trojans and more. With a constantly updated database of more than 10,000 baddy entries, you really can’t go wrong. Also, in the event of deleting something you realize later is safe, you are given the option to recover those files! There is even email support as well as forum support in case things get confusing!

YouTube DownloaderYou’ve possible never heard of this, but now you have! I know I searched for a long time for some sort of tool that allows users to download YouTube videos straight off the website without the use of other bulky software (such as RealPlayer). And this is definitely the tool for the job, people. By specifying the URL of the YouTube video you want in the tool, the program does the rest of the work for you and shortly you are given a video file of your desired video. There is also a small, useful video converter included so that you can convert your downloads for your iPod, iPhone, cell phone, PSP, etc. This thing is awesome, and it’s definitely a must-have for your free program collection.

Another program I find useful is Google Chrome since it seems to offer enhanced virus and malware protection to its users over Internet Explorer, which can be useful if you like to surf sites or use traffic exchanges (where you surf through various sites for credits).

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Never heard of Orbit Downloader, but I'll check it out for ya!

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Yeah, Google Chrome is great; it's my default web browser. Thought I would include it on my upcoming list if I make one. Thanks for the feedback! :)

TattoGuy 2 years ago

I likes this niche you have picked and deff will be following yer progress, good luck !

askjanbrass 2 years ago

All great programs, but RoboForm is essential! It's so helpful, especially since it's really best to have different password for all/most Web sites. I really like how you can save your passwords, forms, login information quickly in an HTML document.

Great write-up, thanks for sharing this!

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Thank you, TattoGuy and askjanbrass!! I'm very happy everybody found some use of these programs because I sure did,

Everybody loves free programs, probably gonna come out with more soon. :D

khmohsin 2 years ago

Kindly note that Wordpress is not a program for PC! I think this is one technical mistake in this hub. However the rest of the programs seem to be really interesting.

Google Tools you introduced are really exciting and good.

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Wordpress is a downloadable blogging tool that you upload to your web server. It's a great, free program so I thought that I would include it in with this list. But you are technically right, it isn't to be installed on the PC.

Thanks for the feedback! :)

William R. Wilson 2 years ago

Nice. I use a bunch of these already, so I can vouch for your choices! I'll have to check out roboform too.

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Roboform is quite nice, and makes your computing experience a lot more efficient! Thanks for checking the hub out!

Amez 2 years ago

Great Stuff, Thank you for your research, I will definitely check out Google Earth and Roboform, Will definitely enjoy being a follower of yours. Ed

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

No problem, Amez. :)

Dacnomania 2 years ago

Avira anti-virus or bit defender, My anti-virus's of choice,

Daemon is great, though is not really needed to anyone besides those whom need more then one "drive", I for one use it in any case, Music player!, "Winamp", I love the 10's of skins available, Picasa, Wordweb( a dictionary ), Almost like the oxford one, Though oxford does not work on vista, Yes I have the "great" crap vista .Audacity is not bad, Though for making your own beats, remixes and so forth, I recommend fruity loops. Well I have many recommendations for many applications, Yet These would be one choices alone .

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Those are all great applications! Thank you, Dacnomania!

bluedaffodil 2 years ago

Oh Thank you soooooo much....Iam really in need for such programs

very usefull Hub :)

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

No problem, bluedaffodil! OpenOffice.org is a really good one if you don't have any quality office applications like a word processor, spreadsheet program, or database program.

kiamzattu 2 years ago

Can youtube downloader support downloading all the videos uploaded by a user and videos present in a playlist? If it does then its great,if it doesn't then I would recommend atube catcher. Its free and you can download it here- http://bit.ly/7zWws

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Are you asking if it can download several at once from one user, and those in playlists on YouTube? The YouTube downloader is a pretty small program that is designed so that you can enter a URL for your desired video, download it to your computer, and it also has conversion capabilities.

Thanks for the recommendation, kiamzattu!! :)

kiamzattu 2 years ago

//Are you asking if it can download several at once from one user, and those in playlists on YouTube?//

Yeah that's exactly what I'm asking because in atube catcher you can enter the URL of the entire playlist/user and all the videos contained in it are listed and then you can select multiple videos from it and download them. Where as in Youtube downloader (as far as I know) we have to manually enter the URL for each and every video, isn't it?

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Well, there you have it, Hubbers. A YouTube downloader that allows you to download several videos one after the other.

Thanks for the suggestion, kiamzattu.

stephensaldana 2 years ago

Hugely informative hub!!!!!!!

The information depicted is centrifuged in very coherent manner and presentation is of par excellence. For instance regarding Word Press is blogger paradise who used to write freely. After reading about Google Earth and Roboform, I am going to look for.

Clear, concise, and right to the point. Great article. Now how about (I'm going to get hit!) Microsoft Security Essentials for Virus defense? It's picked up a few that other purchased products missed.

Why are you going to get hit? :P Thanks for the advice.

reddog1027 2 years ago

I just discovered spybot. You are right, I cleaned all kinds of junk off of my computer.

Thunderthud 2 years ago

Would you recommend Open Office over Google Docs?

RTalloni 2 years ago

Thanks bunches. You are a good teacher! :)

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

@reddog1027 Spybot is great, and it's been around for a pretty long time. It still seems to do a much better job than some of the newer more popular programs out there as well. Glad you are using that gem. :P

@Thunderthud I've actually never tried or heard of Google Docs, but since you mentioned it, I googled it and was impressed. I pretty much had no idea there were web-based office programs. I might even have to start using Google Docs so that I can write an article about it and spread awareness. :)

@RTalloni You're welcome RTalloni. You are so sweet! :)

Thunderthud 2 years ago

Happy to have made you aware of Google Docs. I like it because I don't have to add another suite of programs to my computer.

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Yeah, that's awesome. You have a really good point there. Thanks for reading, Thunderthud!

Securityace 2 years ago

Yess!!!!! I use most of these programs, but I am just learning about you tube. I will checkout the you tube downloader. --Thanks

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

No problem, Securityace!

Nice Hub...

Enelle Lamb 2 years ago

Some really great programs! Excellent information - thanks!

Bibleseo 2 years ago

Nice list. But, is Roboform free? I thought you need to pay for it. I will check it out. thanks.

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Pretty sure it is, I've had it on my computer for a pretty long time now, and I never had to pay for it. It actually might not be anymore, though. I'll look into it. Thanks, Bibleseo! :)

AdamGee 2 years ago

Thanks! I can't wait to start downloading these.

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

@johnmathew395 Thanks!

@Enelle Lamb You're welcome, I'm planning another list currently, so be on the lookout. :)

@AdamGee You're welcome. Glad you liked it!

blognuts 2 years ago

anything for MAC?

Alan Choi 2 years ago

You have some of my favorite apps in here. How can anyone live without roboform at least. :)

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

@blognuts Quite truthfully, I've never used Mac, but a friend of mine just bought one recently, and he's been going on and on about some free programs that he downloaded for it. I'll have to make a list of them and possibly create a "Free Programs for Mac" list!

@Alan Choi Thanks! Yep, to me, Roboform is pretty much essential to browsing the 'net, and I never have to groan any time I see a long registration form anymore. :)

healthgoji 2 years ago

A nice hub and resource - I really like Wordpress

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Thank you healthgoji, Glad you liked it!

ssc73 2 years ago

Not bad on both lists. I use many of them and was actually looking for a password mgr. I thought Roboform was free but I'll check it out.

I would like to clear one thing up about YouTubeDownloader-you don't technically have to type in the URL. Just right click the address bar and mouse over the program.

One other great tool for downloading flash is the Firefox add-on called Download Helper. Anytime there is almost any media playing from a site that can be downloaded, the 'ballons' icon spins right above the video or in the menu bar. The add-on will download it and unless it's a really old vid, give you options for what format you'd like to save it in including HQ MP4/FLV and you can run as many downloads at a time as you want and convert to other formats as well. And that doesn't even cover all it's features. Check it out!!

Miro is also interesting because they use a new file sharing protocol and will download torrents, youtube and many other media files very quickly. Even faster than utorrent alot of times. You have to add 'channels' like you tube or a torrent site but it's pretty simple. It also has some pretty cool free tv/streaming programming. It also saves youtube/flash to mp4.

I have been very happy with MS Security Essentials. I really like AVG too when 7 was in RC. But when I bought the RTM, I tried Security Essentials and haven't switched back. Both good though. The MS program is very effective, very light on resources and free. Nicely compatible with Vista or 7.

Sorry for the long reply. Good info though!!

Oh yea, try 7zip vs WinRAR. Think you'd be surprised especially since it's only about a 1 MB download, avail in 32 and 64 bit, very fast and handles a RIDICULOUS amount of file types.

Sumatra PDF is great too. Kicks adobe's butt!!

Only one issue on your entire list....iTunes?? Really?? LOL

ssc73 2 years ago

Oops! Meant to say I thought Roboform WASN'T free. But I see there is a free vs pro section where you can get a limited free version. It says it's limited to 10 passcards after thirty days. Is that true?? Or can you have unlimited numbers of log-ins/passwords?? I think it's maybe being a bit mis-leading in their description??

I tried keepass but it seemed awful tedious but good security. If you can let me know about roboform, I'd appreciate it!!

Sorry again to take up so much space. There is just so much great freeware/open-source out there that would save people serious $$$. You're doing a great thing for lots of people!! Thank you!!

activewriter 2 years ago

Daemon Tools and Google Earth are really great programs, I am using them! For other onces... I will have to try them, as some of them sounds like really good stuff!

doitrightnow 2 years ago

As per Wordpress, that's all right. Any decent webhost will have an autoinstaller for that, so I prefer to just autoinstall directly onto my host. Too much trouble to download it, upload it, create the MySQL database, change the connections file, and all that. And I think that Adobe Audition beats Audacity flat (I use it professionally). Other than that, great tips. Thanks!

The Specialist 2 years ago

I like using daemon tools and quick media converter! they are awesome programs. I haven't used the others, but I think that I would try some of them. thanks for sharing.

Whether you’re planning to make a switch over from desktop to laptop, upgrading from an old laptop to a new laptop, or just buying a gift for a loved one, finding a new laptop can be daunting. It can be a lot like buying a car. First you have to choose whether you want an SUV, a van, or sedan, then pick a manufacturer, then look at the dozens of other options and find out which features you want or need. Finally you sift through hundreds of cars and find the perfect one for you, only to be left with the choice of color.

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Nice analogy there, asanka1979! :D

ronnie jamieson 2 years ago

Thanks for this - very informative. You may also want to look at Freecorder - this records what is played through your speakers, so can capture streamed music. It can also capture any video played, such as youtube.

mynameisnotpaul 2 years ago

Thanks for that suggestion, Ronnie! :)

Apart from roboform (which I haven't heard of before and will download), I actually have the rest of the programs listed here downloaded, I agree 100% that they're helpful, especially audacity, which is the greatest thing I've ever downloaded.

Thanks for this; another great hub!

TechViaggio 21 months ago

I like your choices. One alternative to RoboForm which you might also like is www.lastpass.com. It's free although it does have a paid component for the iPhone/iPad.
