10 Tips to Speed Up That Slow PC
If you find your computer stalling when you are simply trying to launch your internet browser, then it might be the perfect time to tune your machine up. It is often speculated that a slow computer just means that it is incompetent and outdated, and that it’s time to blow a grand on a whole new system. But, wait; before you go off customizing your new Dell XPS, consider this – there are simple measures you can take to drastically improve the performance of your computer without blowing wasted dollars on computer “repairs” and possibly a whole new unit.
1. Perform a Virus/Spyware Scan
I think the first thing that anybody should do before mucking around in complex system files is scan their computer for viruses and spyware/adware. It’s certainly possible that there are all sorts of bulky, malicious processes running on your computer that you are completely unaware of. In some cases, these might be the culprits of decreased internet connection speed as well. So as a safety measure, perform a scan immediately.

2. Disable Unnecessary Startup Processes
I’ve optimized a lot of computers in my day, and the number one mistake I see is allowing every single program that the user installs to execute on startup. Instead of hitting “Next” a gazillion times the next time you install a program, actually read what the installer is trying to tell you and make sure you uncheck that “Start on startup” box. But in your case, you probably already have a ton of software starting when you start your computer up and you have time to go grab a glass of milk and cook your breakfast before your computer is finished firing up. So you’re going to:
A. Start up the handy “msconfig” file. (To do this, you are going to click “Start>Run” or on Windows Vista: “Start>All Programs>Accessories>Run.” When the box appears, type “msconfig” in the field and hit Enter.
B. You are going to click the Startup tab.
C. Now you are looking at your enormous list of startup programs. You are going to go through and uncheck all programs that were installed by you. If you are unsure whether or not you installed it or you don’t know what it is, leave it alone. Doing this does not by any means uninstall your programs, it just tells the computer what to execute on startup, and what not to.
D. When you are finished, click “OK.”
E. You are prompted to decide to restart at that moment or later on. It doesn’t really matter what you decide to do.
3. Defrag Your Computer
Windows didn’t just include their performance improvement tools for no reason at all. One of the regular tasks that you should perform on your computer is the defragging of your computer. Doing so allows the computer to arrange your files in a more sensible way resulting in better performance overall. This process is a pretty lengthy one if you have a large disk, so I’d recommend scheduling a specific time for the computer to run it (preferably a usual time when you are not at the computer). You can access the Defragmentation utility by clicking “Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter.”
4. Perform a Disk Cleanup
This is another great tool that Microsoft included with its operating systems. Disk Cleanup helps you go through your files and pick out what it unneeded and okay to delete. Disk Cleanup is great because it helps delete temporary Internet files, temporary Windows files, Windows components that you are not using, installed programs that you no longer use, downloaded programs such as ActiveX controls and Java applets, etc. It also empties your Recycle Bin. I’d recommend this if you want to go through and delete a lot of stuff at once.
5. Download CCleaner for Cleaning Your Registry
CCleaner is great as it cleans all of the things that Disk Cleanup cleans, as well as your registry. It is quite popular these days among computer users as it does a very good job of checking for and repairing inconsistencies and problems within the registry. Not much else to say about this one, except you aren’t getting the optimal experience without CCleaner.
6. Lower Your Resolution and Disable Aero
Simply put, a higher resolution means a more detailed image and more pixels for your processor and RAM to have to deal with. If you’re operating on a resolution of 1920x1200, you could probably stand to downgrade a little. If you have Vista, another step you could take is to disable “Aero.” Some haven’t a clue what Aero even is, but it’s just the extra bells and whistles that Microsoft decided to slap onto the Vista GUI. To disable it, perform the following:
A. Right click on the desktop and click “Personalize.”
B. When the personalization window opens, click the link near the bottom that states, “Open classic appearance properties for more color options”
C. Now you are going to be presented with a box that is titled “Appearance Settings” and with a list of Color Schemes. Click “Windows Vista Basic” or any of the others if you have a preference, and then hit “OK.”
7. Don’t Run Several Applications at Once
Think of your computer as a car. If you keep piling cargo (“running programs” for all the oblivious) into it, it is not going to be able to perform efficiently, and eventually it will not even be able to accelerate. If you overload your computer with running apps, it’s going to freeze and possibly crash. You can’t get angry at a machine that is not equipped to run programs of enormous stature.
8. Purchase More RAM
In simple terms, the more RAM you have, the more your computer can efficiently run large programs or several programs at once. If you have 1 GB of RAM, and you are running programs that require a total memory amount of 2 GBS, don’t expect satisfactory results. In fact, don’t even expect running those programs to be possible. If you want avoid purchasing a new computer, buying RAM is going to be inevitable. With newer programs surfacing on the market, they are becoming more and more needy on resources so your computer must reflect this fluctuation in power. The price of the hardware will be dependent on the type of computer you have.
9. Add a Dedicated Video Card
If your computing tasks require powerful graphics output, I’d recommend purchasing a dedicated video card. If you rely on your integrated video adapter to display hefty graphics, then it may be helpful for you to know that these adapters use your RAM. You can purchase a dedicated video card that has built in memory, so viewing bulky graphics doesn’t suck your RAM up.
10. Maybe It Really Is Time for a New Computer
These tips just wouldn’t be complete without this one. If you’ve given all of these tips a go, and things just don’t seem to be progressing, it really may be time for a new computer. When buying a new computer, it can be an exciting process, but there are some things to remember.
A. Make sure the computer is going to be capable of what you need it to do.
B. Make sure the computer can be easily upgraded. Technology is advancing rather quickly and you want to make sure your machine can easily adapt.
C. Consider the warranty. This is a MUST.

Good point, Oli!
I don't have time to write lots of articles because of school, but I push them out when I can. So far I've accumulated a whopping $1.29 with AdSense, but then again I don't know the secrets and tricks. Haha, how are you doing with it? Seeing any good figures?
Good interesting hub, well done. Point 6 is especially good.
Thanks, hypnodude! :)
I earned around $1600 last month, don't worry, you will get there!
Whooooaaa, nelly. That's pretty impressive! Keep up the awesome work!
My PC has been slowing down. I see you have a lot of useful tips here and I'll have to come back and follow those steps you explained. Thanks. I'll be voting for you. Congratulations on being a HubNugget Wannabe and good luck with the votes.
I am not sure if that was a good or a bad thing, but I'm glad these tips were of some use to you! :)
Great article.
And congratulations on your HubNugget nomination!
Most of the advice I've read about adsense and hub income suggest that links and time plus quality will equal income.
Check out Mark Knowles hubs on traffic and links. Good info. Straight talk.
Good luck.

Just curious. Where are you guys seeing that I was nominated for this thing? I am still kind of confused about the entire thing.
You should have received an email with all details, this is the link to the hub: http://hubpages.com/hub/HubNuggets-There-Should-Be
Compliments again. :)
Congratulations on your hub making it as well! I am truly honored!
Thank you, hypnodude!
All these people got to you first! But better late than never right! Hurrah for being a Hubnugget Wannabe! Yes, vote, vote, vote and promote, promote, promote! LOL I'll be sure to keep all these things in mind esp. when I see my PC slowing down a couple of times lately. I've done the Ccleaner thing but I think I need to learn the other stuff as well.

Enjoy the Hubnuggets!
Haha, that's absolutely right! Thank you guys for the nominations, I really had no idea my stuff was worthy enough for something like that... haha.
Yeah, these tips are pretty helpful, and will help keep your computer from turning into a turtle tool. HAHA!
Thanks again, take care.
You're absolutely right! One of the best things you can do it to disable some startup processes, which is probably something that most often gets overlooked. Especially if you want your computer to turn on much faster, cut back on the programs that load immediately upon startup.
Hi Helen, these tips are what I need right now. My quite ancient laptop is annoyingly slow now but I had to make do for a little while longer (gotta make money to buy me a new one). I'll implement these tips right away.
Congratulations and good luck on your nomination. I know it'll be exciting to promote your hub...just do it!
Glad that these are of some use for your laptop! Those babies are expensive to replace, so do all you can before going out to get another one! :P
Thanks for the compliment about the nomination! I actually have just promoted it once on my Facebook, I don't really know where else to promote it at! hahaa!
I bookmarked your hub since I may need this shortly. Thanks for a very well-written informative hub. Aloha!
No problem, Elayne! Glad to meet you!
Great article NotPaul, you managed to tell me a few things about a subject I thought I knew it all namely computers. I'm bookmarkin' this un kentuckan'!
Ben
ahahah! Thanks Ben! Glad that you've found some use! You are quite humorous. :D
Thanks for the tips. I am on my second computer, having messed up my own.I used my brother's computer and now I cannot even open Start.I wish I knew what I did wrong.Window was always updating my computer and my brother's computer so I do not know what went wrong.Occasionally I scanned and emptied temporary files and cookies. I cannot scan or restore the system now because nothing opens up.I have tried the F8 and F10 route. What's next to do? Both computers are less than four years old with Windows XP and Word 2007.Maybe they will help me in the future.
I am such a computer idiot, that most of this stuff goes over my head, but I'm determined to learn, because I do need the help. Thank you so much for this hub. I'm bookmarking it and referring to it regularly. Congrats.
No problem fastfreta, thanks for bookmarking, and check back often because I plan to come out with more PC tip-related articles soon!
aioffe379, you say that you can't click Start. Is it freezing or crashing when you click on it, or is it just not visibly there? You say that System Restore or virus protection software will not load, correct? Sounds like you might have a pretty gruesome virus on your hands. If it is so bad that you cannot simply navigate your computer successfully, you might need to do a wipe of your hard drive (reinstall your OS and wipe your computer clean).
There are articles and how-tos all over the net on how to do this. If you are still struggling after doing some research (or if you cannot search the net for this topic because of the way your computer is acting), let me know, and I'll see what I can do.
Ive bookmarked it as well. Thanks for writing!:)
Thank you for all this useful advice. I am always having this trouble, but not any more I hope
What a great hub, so easy to understand, I think even I can do it.
Congratulations Helen! You are a HubNugget!
@shazwellyn Thank you for bookmarking!! You're welcome.
@Kathy02 You're very welcome, this advice that anybody can take and use! If you have any trouble, let me know.
@reddog1027 Glad you found some use of the hub! :) You can do it!
@Papa Sez Thank you for the congrats, I am still kind of surprised about it. Thanks! :)
Congrats for HubNugget!
I do everything on your list except for using CCleaner, which is a great product. And I do often have 20 - 30 things open at once, but with 2 gigs of RAM. Excellent advice to keep you PC running fast. :)
Great, MyWebs! Yeah, you should totally try to use CCleaner regularly if you don't already. Thanks for the congrats! :)
Thanks for this super Hub on maintaining your stuff. I admit to being neglectful of performing these simple steps, so I finally started to tackle the job two days ago. LOL! My hard drive was so gunked up with trash that it took me nearly half a day of deleting and moving files around before I had enough free disk space to defrag. Super kick in the butt your Hub was for me!
Wow, Sally! That's awesome, I'm really glad it came in handy for you, thank you so much for reading.
God job Paul,an useful hub.Thanks

Some nice tips :)
Remember that overheating can be a problem too, using a compressed air cleaner on your computer insides can shift dirt and massively reduce heat inside your PC!
Nice to see you are still writing hubs though, have you made any cash yet?!
