Unemployment rates aren’t exactly at their best right now in the nation, but that doesn’t mean that the hiring process has stopped across the board! If you’re stuck in a state of unemployment, now could be the best time to fix and update your resume. With all of the free time you have from being unemployed, you could really pump out a solid resume that could land you your next job very soon.

Your first task with fixing your resume up should be to look it over for any grammatical or structure errors. These could play a big role in whether or not you land a job, so it’s imperative that you try to weed as many out as possible. You could even have another person proofread it to double check for errors. Also, make sure that your resume contains all of the basics such as your contact information, work history, references, etc.

Additionally, make sure that the information listed in your resume is as up to date as possible. Maybe you’ve worked at a few jobs since you last revised the resume. In this case, go through and list any new information such as new skills you’ve acquired, more recent jobs you’ve worked at, and more.

With the gap in between employment, you could even spruce your resume up by getting a degree/certification and listing it. You will be much more likely to land a potential job if you’ve got the right qualifications for it. If you’ve got a job in mind that you’d like to eventually land, meet the requirements by getting an education or certification to do the job.

Lastly, make sure that you tailor your resume for the job you’re aiming for. If you plan to apply for multiple jobs, it may help to make separate resumes for all of them. This can easily be done by taking your original resume and saving copies of it for all of the job opportunities. Lastly, go through each one and personalize the objective and skill sets so that they are relative to the job.

Unemployment doesn’t have to be a horrible gap between work! Use the time to your advantage by fixing your resume up and making it as impressive as possible.
